Take advantage of this one-day Parisian getaway to discover one of the capital’s most emblematic districts with your state-certified guide: the “Belly of Paris”, as Émile Zola called it. Located in the 1st arrondissement, the Halles district alone embodies more than ten centuries of history, urban development and Parisian life.

Designed for groups, this tour offers a complete immersion in historical heritage, contemporary architecture and emblematic neighborhoods.

Les Halles: from medieval market to the beating heart of Paris

The Halles district dates back to the 11th century, when King Louis VI decided to create a central market there. Established on former marshland, it quickly became a major economic center.

In 1183, Philippe Auguste had wooden market halls built to support the expansion of trade. Over the centuries, the market continued to grow, attracting merchants, locals and products from all over the region.

But as the population grew, the Halles gradually became insufficient and unhealthy.

The Baltard pavilions: an architectural revolution

The 19th century saw the need for a major transformation. In 1853, architect Victor Baltard was commissioned to build new glass and cast-iron pavilions.

These modern structures for their time offer :

  • Better air circulation
  • Rational market organization
  • Innovative architecture

The Pavillons Baltard became a symbol of modern Paris, until they were demolished in the 1970s.

From Les Halles to the Canopée: an urban metamorphosis

In the 1960s, faced with traffic and hygiene problems, the market was transferred to Rungis. The district entered a new phase of transformation.

In 1979, the Forum des Halles was inaugurated, followed by a complete renovation in 2010 to create La Canopée, a contemporary glass and steel structure inspired by plants.

Today, the site is :

  • A major transport hub with Châtelet-Les Halles
  • A shopping and cultural center
  • A modern, dynamic pedestrian area

Saint-Eustache church: a monument of style and history

The nearbySaint-Eustache church is one of the neighborhood’s must-see monuments.

Built in the 16th century and restored in the 19th, it is impressive for its :

  • Its monumental dimensions
  • Its blend of styles: Flamboyant Gothic, Renaissance and Classical
  • Its exceptional organ, one of the largest in France

It has played host to such historic figures as Louis XIV, Molière and Madame de Pompadour.

The Bourse de Commerce: from trade to museum of contemporary art

Just a stone’s throw away, the Bourse de Commerce is a perfect illustration of Paris’ ability to reinvent its heritage.

A former trading center, it is now home to the Collection Pinault, an internationally renowned museum of contemporary art.

Entirely redesigned by the architect Tadao Ando, the site offers :

  • Major contemporary art exhibitions
  • Architecture blending history and modernity
  • An immersive cultural experience

Beaubourg: an architectural icon not to be missed

Your route then takes you to the Centre Pompidou, also known as Beaubourg.

Although currently closed for renovation, this building remains a major curiosity in the Parisian landscape.

Inaugurated in 1977, it is distinguished by :

  • Revolutionary architecture with exposed structures
  • Colorful pipes and outdoor escalators
  • Its central role in modern and contemporary art

This bold project, championed by Georges Pompidou, had a profound impact on the cultural history of Paris.
